GUIDE: WHICH TABLE TENNIS RUBBER SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Selecting the perfect table tennis rubber can be a challenging task, even for seasoned players. Each player has a unique playing style that influences their choice. Perhaps you are a defensive player who emphasizes control and aims to confound your opponent with a variety of spin techniques. Or maybe you are an offensive player who relies on aggressive topspin shots to dominate and quickly finish the rally.

Regardless of your playing style, you want your table tennis racket to perform in a way that complements your strengths. This means the ideal rubber for you may differ significantly from what works best for someone else. This guide will assist you in choosing the right table tennis rubber. Here, you can learn about the different materials, adhesives, and technologies behind our rubbers. You can also discover which rubber best suits your playing style to create a racket tailored to your needs.

Have you already selected your blade? Now, delve into our guide on rubbers and learn how to properly glue table tennis rubbers to optimize your racket’s performance.

PLAYING STYLES

There are as many playing styles as table tennis players around the world, but we usually narrow playing styles down to three categories: defensive, all-round, and offensive. To make it easier for you to find the right blade, we’ve divided them according to the three playing styles.

The defensive table tennis player

If you put a heavy focus on control and exhausting your opponent, you are most certainly a defensive player. You aim to make it as difficult as possible for your opponent, with a lot of reverse spin to get them off balance. You prefer to play with pimpled or anti-spin rubber, hence the perfect combination for you would be one of our defensive blades.

The all-round table tennis player

As an all-round player, control is important, therefore you should choose a 5-ply blade, which offers excellent control. You focus on taking command through topspin, and prefer a safer, more controlled style, rather than going for speed. Your main goal is to keep the ball on the table, and you prefer to play at a distance. Your playing style is more varied and you use different tactics when required.

The offensive table tennis player

An offensive player is just that, with a more attacking, aggressive style that incorporates a lot of topspin and loops. You’re a player with a well-developed technique who’s confident about determining what the ball does. An offensive blade offers the high speed you’re looking for to put pressure on your opponent. This category boasts variety, and we’ve therefore chosen to categorise our blades as Offensive or Offensive+. In the Offensive+ category, you’ll find ultra fast blades that are used by the world elite.

RUBBER & THE SPONGE

S = Soft Sponge:

The softer sponge material allows for greater dwell time on the racket, providing the player with enhanced ball control and more time to adjust their stroke. Additionally, the sponge's softness tends to produce a more audible sound when hitting the ball, which some players find enjoyable and motivating. Therefore, if you prioritize these aspects in your game, a soft sponge may be the right choice for you.

M = Medium Sponge:

A medium table tennis sponge is a versatile option that provides the perfect balance between speed and control for players. It is an ideal choice for those who want to increase the pace of their game while maintaining precision and accuracy. The medium hardness of the sponge allows for optimal ball contact, resulting in greater control and improved spin. This type of sponge is suitable for players of all levels, from amateur to professional, as it offers the flexibility to adapt to different playing styles. Whether you're looking to increase your speed or fine-tune your technique, a medium table tennis sponge is a reliable and effective choice.

H = Hard sponge:

A hard table tennis sponge is a popular choice among advanced players who are looking to improve their game. This type of sponge is perfect for players who have already developed excellent technique and want to add more speed and spin to their shots.

A hard table tennis sponge is designed to be more rigid than softer sponges, which allows the player to generate more power and spin in their shots. This is because a hard sponge provides less contact with the ball, which creates more bounce and spin.

Additionally, the increased rigidity of the sponge allows players to generate more speed and control in their shots.

While a hard sponge may not be suitable for beginners, it is the perfect choice for advanced players who have already developed excellent technique. The increased speed, spin, and control that a hard sponge provides can take a player's game to the next level and allow them to dominate their opponents on the table.

In conclusion, a hard table tennis sponge is the perfect choice for advanced players who are looking to add more speed and spin to their game. Its increased rigidity and durability make it a reliable and effective choice for players who want to get the most out of their rubber. If you have excellent technique and want to take your game to the next level, a hard sponge may be the perfect choice for you.

XH = Extra hard sponge:

An extra hard table tennis sponge is the perfect choice for professional players who have a highly developed technique and want to add even more speed and spin to their game. This type of sponge is the most rigid and provides the highest level of speed and control for the most advanced players.

 Extra hard sponges are designed to be even more rigid than hard sponges, which allows the player to generate even more power and spin in their shots. This type of sponge provides the least amount of contact with the ball, which creates the most bounce and spin.

 Professional players who use extra hard sponges typically have a highly developed technique and are skilled at controlling the ball. They can take full advantage of the increased speed and spin that an extra hard sponge provides and can use it to dominate their opponents on the table.

While an extra hard sponge is not suitable for beginners or intermediate players, it is the perfect choice for the most advanced players who have the skill and experience to use it effectively. It is also important to note that an extra hard sponge requires even more skill and technique to use effectively than a standard hard sponge.

 In conclusion, an extra hard table tennis sponge is the perfect choice for the most advanced players who have a highly developed technique and want to add even more speed and spin to their game. This type of sponge provides the highest level of speed and control and is the preferred choice of professional players. If you have the skill and experience to use it effectively, an extra hard sponge can take your game to the next level and help you dominate your opponents on the table.

Thicknesses and hardnesses

The thickness of a table tennis sponge plays an important role in the speed, spin, and control of a player's shots. Generally speaking, the thicker the sponge, the more speed and spin a player can generate.

However, it's important to note that as the sponge thickness increases, so does the loss of control. A thicker sponge provides more dwell time, which allows the player to generate more spin and speed on the ball. This is because a thicker sponge absorbs more of the ball's energy and releases it with more force. This effect can be especially noticeable on shots like topspin, which require a lot of spin and speed to be effective.

However, the increased sponge thickness also means that the player will have less control over their shots. This is because the ball will spend less time on the sponge, which can make it harder to predict its trajectory and placement. This can make it more difficult to hit precise shots and can result in more errors. It's important for players to find the sponge thickness that works best for their game. This can depend on a variety of factors, including the player's skill level, playing style, and personal preferences.

Some players may prefer a thinner sponge that provides more control, while others may opt for a thicker sponge that offers more speed and spin. In conclusion, the thickness of a table tennis sponge is an important factor in a player's game. While a thicker sponge can provide more speed and spin, it's important to find the right thickness that offers the right balance of control and performance.

Players can preferably experiment with different thicknesses to find the one that best suits their game and helps them to improve their overall performance on the table.

Q&A RUBBERS

Which sponge thickness should I select?

Rubber sheets come with varying sponge thicknesses, which act as a trampoline between the topsheet and the wood. A thinner sponge will result in a harder feel, as the ball will make less contact with the sponge and more with the wood surface. This produces less spin and speed. In contrast, a thicker sponge will provide a softer feel and generate more spin and speed, as the ball will sink deeper into the sponge and be launched out with greater velocity.

At what point should I replace my rubber sheets?

The performance of rubber sheets deteriorates over time and with exposure to the elements. As it ages, the rubber will produce less spin and will feel less lively. The lifespan of your rubber sheet can vary depending on usage, but a general guideline is:

(# of days played/week) = (#of times to change/year)

This means that if you play once a week, you should change your rubbers once a year. And if you play three days a week, then you’ll change your rubbers three times a year, once every four months. Professional players usually change their rubber more often, like monthly, bi-weekly or weekly. This equals an estimated lifetime of a rubber to be around 60 playing hours. A rubber generally needs to be replaced after about 2 years, regardless of whether you have played less than 60 hours with it.

A worn-out rubber will be noticeable in play and upon visual inspection. You’ll notice your rubbers losing their color. This change happens slowly over time, so it can be hard to notice. It’s essential not to play with worn-out rubbers over long periods. If you do so, you’ll acquire bad habits, since you will compensate with your technique to make up for your faulty equipment. Most players with worn-out rubbers become more passive because it’s hard for them to attack with equipment that has no grip. A good way to tell if your rubbers are worn out is to rub a ball across the rubber, and if it slips more in the middle, then you should switch out your rubber.

You should also change out your rubber if it has suffered substantial damage from hitting the table. While small nicks/cuts on the edge won’t impact your in-game performance, they can quickly develop and spread easily.

What is the recommended cleaner for rubber sheets?

STIGA rubber clean is specially formulated for cleaning table tennis rubber sheets. It's an VOC-free liquid cleaner that effectively restores the rubber surface to its original condition. To maintain the performance of your rubber sheets, it's recommended to clean them after each use and store them properly. Apply STIGA rubber clean on the surface, use the sponge on the top of the bottle, let it dry and then place your racket in the case. For optimal results, store your racket in a temperature-controlled environment and avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.

Which type of rubber is suitable for my playing style?

Inverted rubbers, known for their tacky surface, have the ability to produce immense spin. They are suitable for all types of play, whether you are an attacker or a defensive player. This rubber type is considered the most adaptable option.

Short pimple rubbers are the inverted version of traditional rubber sheets. The gap between the pimples helps to neutralize spin from your opponents' shots, allowing for more aggressive attacking play regardless of spin. This type of rubber is ideal for hitting, blocking, and returning serves, but it is not as effective at producing spin as regular inverted rubber sheets.

Long pimple rubbers are often used by players who rely on their opponents' errors. They are similar to short pimple rubbers in composition, but the pimples are taller. When the ball comes into contact with this surface, the taller pimples bend easily, reversing the incoming spin. This keeps the opponent guessing about the type of spin on the ball.

No-sponge (OX) rubbers have a long pimple top sheet without the use of sponge. They still effectively neutralize spin, but the strokes produced with them have less spin, less speed, and a crisper feel.

What will a DNA rubber with Power Sponge Cell (PSC) offer me?

The DNA rubber with Power Sponge Cell (PSC) is a revolutionary rubber that offers increased power compared to traditional rubbers. This rubber allows for great speed and exceptional spin, without sacrificing control. With its unique sponge technology, the DNA rubber with Power Sponge Cell (PSC) allows players to generate more power behind their shots, while still maintaining precision and accuracy. Whether you're an aggressive attacker or a precision-minded player, the DNA rubber with Power Sponge Cell (PSC) is the perfect choice for anyone looking to take their game to the next level. Its advanced design provides improved ball control, extra speed and maximum spin, making it the ideal rubber for aggressive players and those who want to take their play to the next level. Whether you're looking to dominate the competition or simply improve your game, the DNA rubbers with Power Sponge Cell (PSC) is the perfect choice.

Are the sponge and top-sheet already glued together when I order rubber?

The top-sheet and sponge layer are assembled at the factory during production.
